Stick It

by JD Clay

After 20 years
I visited my old high school
Gargoyles lining the parapet
Guarding what I’ll never know

That dreaded bell
Still echoed through the halls
Drowning out the locker doors
And sophomoric speak

None of my teachers were there any more
But I did find my old desk
Near the radiator in the biology room
Clinging to the scent of formaldehyde

I knew it was the same desk all right
Having carved Nancee’s name deep
Inside a bleeding heart
With a fingernail clipper

I sat in it for a while
Reminiscing
It seemed a lot smaller than before
And I never would have believed
That my old bazooka gum under the seat
Could hold its flavor that long

At least I think it was mine

God, you are so twisted...& that's why I love you. LOL Each time I read a peom of yours, I can't wait to get to the end to see how you'll surprise me this time. Then, I read it again...and again. You are such a talent, Jd, you really are. :)

You got me walking on memory lane there for a while. Surprisingly lovely end... although I don't recall bazooka gum to hold flavour long at all...to me it seemed always to have lost it before it was even chewed heheheh. Fun read buddy :)

a nice chaw about school days, Jadi, and hopefully that was gum neath that reminiscence.

I was savoring a walk down memory lane with my lunch... until the gum...it ruined the flavor! Great memory sparker JD!

*laughing* You always have a surprise for us. Such a joy you are!

You definitely bring back memories with this and quite a chuckle at its end. The image of the desk "Clinging to the scent of formaldehyde" will be preserved as a favorite part for me. Good one JD!

doesn't matter the gum was urs but still it smelt the same didn't it?hehe Whoever put it there needs a pat in the back coz i guess that was the head to the train of ur thoughts that lead to this wonderful piece of work.

oh my. how odd nostalgia can be. cute piece, jadi.

OMG! This takes tongue in cheek...or should I say gum in cheek to a whole new level. I hate people who stick their gum anywhere else but in the garbage. On my new planet, one of the laws will be anyone caught sticking their gum on inapropriate places will be hung upside down, and others will be invited to come and stick gum all over the offender's clothing. Sound like fun??? LOL! Have a great weekend jadi!! :o)

I tasted the gum too. But I disagree about the flavor. It was pretty blah and well digested. I guess you got to it first.

laughing, sent it to a friend of mine big into the high school reunion

LOL! With a bit of pathos and your wry humor you catch the essence of high school reminiscence.

This took me to a wonderful trip down memory lane. I can relate to it, even with the gum =)

well jadi, this one is worth chewing for a while...clever as always, your writing offers the reader an honest memory, without fanfare, with bare details, chosen seemingly in some chronology ur memory retained...lovely to read u always, and apparently I am not alone...peace to u, poet....jewels

JD you are so mischievous, you make me sad and nostalgic and then sneak up and slap a smile on my face at the end.....perfection.

Posted by Michelle Angelini on 08/03/07 at 01:34 AM

eeeeuuuuwww - bazooka gum after how many years? Was it wearing sun glasses to protect it from the glare of chemistry experiments? And what ever happened to Nancee?

I guess you really cannot go home again. Only you would try to chew a 20 yr old piece of gum! Fun read with alot of truth. Enjoyed this piece- it made me smile!

Posted by A. Paige White on 09/17/12 at 08:37 PM

ROFL... This is wonderful, Jadi. The comments add that extra dimension of dementia I so thoroughly enjoy. Hope you told Rubey to get that gum out of his cheek since it's easier to see the tongue sticking out of it when writing a comment, lololol.... LOVED THIS!
