nvr anthr flwr

by Andrew S Adams

bouquets of flowers populate this house,
top to bottom, side to side, all around-
each of these from well wishers, high-hopers
miracle believers and the sadly resigned;
she reads each accompanying card and
sobs- then sets it aside with the rest.

every bouquet that comes
through that front door is a
none-too-subtle reminder that
she is not a survivor; she is
a terminal case- each bouquet
is another nail in the coffin-

this place looks like a funeral home-
her soul is fleeing her body before
her body flees as well; and as she
looks for a place to place these next
bouquets, she's not dead yet but
she's already pushing up daises;

she's looking forward to the day
when she never has to see another
flower again-
she may ultimately be better for it;

but i have been afraid of that day
for my entire life.

This is an unusual poem, with an unusual perspective, brave and honest, the cumulative image like that accumulation of bouquets, real, an unusually meaningful. I had to think about the title, and decide that it is meaningful as it is echoes the theme --- the shell of words, the "soul(s) fleeing ... (the) body" yet still recognizable. Excellent.

Jeepers...sound like a worthy addition to the "too much of a good thing" file. Quite the paradox...you don't want to lose her, and yet only through death will the flowers top to bottom stop. Good poem Andrew in that's easy to visualize. Congrats on hitting No. 1!

The whole second stanza drew me in, Andrew, and the thought of more and more flowers making her feel like she is in a funeral home was so believable. Well intentions are not always the best. I enjoyed this poem tremendously.

I can't believe I haven't commented on this poem. So well written - so sad. What does one send if not flowers - what does one say? It is a dilemma of emotions and responses for both the living and the dying. You have captured it.
