Fat Girls are Buoyant

by Alison McKenzie

My favorite part of the summer and hot weather
Has always been going swimming.
Mind you,
I have no business in a swimsuit!
It’s only my unostentatious manner
Which affords me the gall
To be seen in anything spandex.
Still, you must understand,
It is a foolish act I will perform again and again
For the luxury of spending time with Water.

I slip in
Relax
Let everything come to the surface
Close my eyes
Drift
The muffled sounds of
Swimmers at the other end of the pool
Laughing
The sharp crash of someone’s cannon ball
A child’s ecstatic scream before happily going under
This is one place I’m not too big
This is one place I fit

Water feels like home.
We go together like Earth and Sky.
I swear I must have been a whale in another life,
And maybe I miss it -
But today that's alright.

yeah, my friend and I noticed that we floated much better than this guy with no body fat when we used to go swimming together. We were also able to stand colder water better than him too. It has its purposes. :)

I enjoyed this one Alison. I must have been a rock in another life, I go straight down when I try to float...Charlie

this poem has a refreshing buoyancy that you float with your honest pen and wit. Love it!

Lol! really. Thanks for this light moment, made more so by your gall and honesty. My wife and I are buoyed by your poem. It will make it possible for us to summon up the gall necessary to take a dip at the end of the long days of driving on our up-coming road trip from Dallas to Desert Springs, California. Thanks again, girl.

this is so wonderful, alison... oh, you have set a beautiful example here of self acceptance... which is most important, above all others... excellent and endearing piece... blessings...

Wow! Can't help but admire the honesty of this piece. Well done!!

God, the title of this caught my attention...my mother used to tell me i had no business wearing a bikini, and i was so thin back then. Oh well. These days, im pregnant plus packed on a few extra in the hip/thigh/rear region i dont want to think of my swimsuit!

a wonderful and sweet self effacer. for whatever you were in another life, you are certainly a poet in this one.

I love this...being heavier, I can relate. But it has never stopped me from putting on a swimsuit :) Thank you for writing this

I like the matter of fact tone and the peceful visual of the far end of the pool.

Oh, this is fabulous! I wear blue spandex pants when I ride my bike and I always get the eye from people when I do it. But there's a point when you just have to stop caring because really, what does it matter? Nice job!

The title sucked me in, the images delighted, the simple honesty will stick with me. Thanks for the read.

What radiant beauty confined in these stanzas! I can completely and totally one hundred percent relate. I've always been a mermaid of sorts. A voluptuous mermaid at that. ;D Splendid write! I'm adding this to my favorites.

this one floated to the surface on random fav's...so glad it did! the only bright spot for me in the summer is the fact that my butt floats so i can't drown when the kids are jumping on me :)

A great choice for POTD! I love your voice in this, the matter of fact tone. The last stanza is magic, and as a swimmer, I can hear the pool side sounds perfectly from your descriptions.

Great write. Really enjoyed it. Congrats on POTD

Great to read again this splash of honesty. And a worthy addition to the POTD hall of fame. Congrats Alison!

Amen! This needed to be written. And congratulations on POTD!

You are one honest girl! I'll bet you look just fine in a swimsuit. I live by the bech, but don't swim. Loved stanza 2; in fact, I loved this entire piece!

...bathing suits, suit me...it's always something to get out of...need any help?

who's to say who should and shouldnt wear a swimsuit? have you read 'she's come undone'? this reminded me of that novel, one of my favorite books of all time. excellent write.

I really like this. I've always thought I was a hippo in a previous life.
