To Go With My Bag Of Empty Thoughts

by JD Clay

On a quest for knowledge

I came across a vending machine

in the middle of nowhere

The flashing sign on top read

Answers

I stepped up to the machine

reached in my pocket and

drew out the universal question

Why

I slipped my question into the slot

then pressed the answer button marked

Short

Smoke billowed from the machine

It shook violently and

made horrible groaning noises

Into the hopper with a thud

it dispensed

A 12oz. can of

Why Not

This is far most the best "no answer" one could get!

Clever satire on the desire to retrieve all the answers through technology and without much effort! Instant answers wanted to instant quesions.

One of my favourites, Jadi. What a picture...and what a great thought.

Witty, funny, entertaining, realistic analogy of how we are always seeking answers and never getting them at least here on Earth. :o)

True to form you pull out this gem of a piece in a way that no other can!

And not a maintenance guy in sight to get your money back, right?:O)

Posted by Max Bouillet on 06/23/03 at 02:33 AM

Excellent... I loved the almost audible thud. Like a weight crushing down on curiosity... great work.

Hi Clay, Good one, very clever. Avending machine, ya just can't trust machines all the time. Hee! Hee! That question must have been a good one, it blew up the machine. Jean

Lately, I've lost several dollars in this machine..but it is worth it just knowing where the machine is (chuckle) - The next time you see me, I'll buy... - RCat 'May your house be blessed from Tigers'

that's the most unique poem i've ever read. i love the style...and the topic..like others said serious and comical at the same time.

Impossible to dispense with irony - and I was so hoping for an explosive ending :) Classic.

Posted by David Hill on 07/16/07 at 12:24 AM

That is as clear as it ever gets. Clever and true. It reminds me of a scene with Mickie Dolenz in the Monkees movie, "Head."

Most excellent. I'm glad to see this one again!

Each time I scent a doubt or sense an insecurity I slip into my question and press my inner archives there where I treasure your poem - and it thuds in me - the words arise - licking my lips I savour the taste of the explosive - "Why Not!?" and make it mine ... *m.a

LOL! What a rip off. For such a profound question surely only a 20 oz. can would have quenched your dearth.

Absolutely outstanding - utterly humorous, and yet at the same time, frighteningly honest. Keep up the wonderful word craft!

For the umpteenth time I love (the ultra humor truth in) this, and thought I have, by now, left a comment. However, as it turns out, the poem takes me into another realm of thought, and I oddly forget that I'm visiting on a machine. This time I'm slipping my comment coupon in. And my comment is
