Meatloaf on Friday

by Kristina Woodhill

We will make meat loaf together today
I will gather the beef, ground and soft
I will gather the sausage, ground and spicy

An egg will be broken, we will marry yellow and white
An onion will be breeched, sliced, diced, cried over
Wet cheeks will claim to be from the spray

Crackers will be crumbled, old hands know each snap
Fillers will fill, salt and partner will dance the “savory”
A dollop of Worchestershire might sneak in

(I will try – you will grin and shake your finger)

The ketchup will tip its hat, dive in
Red sugar, why do you taste so good!
I can smell it now!

Our voices will mix quietly in your neat kitchen
Your solid counter tops will wrap us around
We will bump like two soft aging buns

We will fill the loaf pan and it will work
The smell will fill the kitchen
The meal will fill the belly

We will push aside pill bottles and white coats
We will ignore four small wheels your legs have sprouted
The indoor brakes for those fast moving doorways

This meatloaf will be fit for our King!
He sits quietly on his soft throne;
His scepter touched pavement too hard yesterday

Knighted its way deeply inside,
Pretender to a broken rib
A rib is dead! Long live the rib!

Noble King, we salute your will to stand
the wish to always rule your inch of land

We will make meat loaf together today
Our napkins will sop the juices, ignore the drool;
We will eat, and drink, and be merry!

Just as long as that rib isn't the one you were made from, then I'll eat this meatloaf! Isn't food fun!! I loved this one.

Your writing has a life that defies its self-deprecating substance...

Wow! You turn the preparation of food, in this case meatloaf, into an classic...epic poem. Brings back fond memories of my childhood, when mom would make a similar version, and taught us how to cook many things. Thanks for that and a great poem, Kristina.

Only you could write a piece on meatloaf and make it sound wonderful. The amusing part is that I could picture you doing it.

Maybe I am the only one depraved enough to read all kind of sensuality and relationship into this poem. Meatloaf IS an exercise in mixing. You know, when you post a poem here, it is subject to all kinds of interpretations :-) I love this marvelous mixture. Thanks, Kristina.
