Venus

by George Hoerner

i see the slice of lemon
hanging in the dark sky
the drop of lemon juice
just below and to the side

that drop is Venus looking
for her father Jupiter
asking if she might
rise one morning
to see Apollo
and kiss this sun god
and of course
she does just that

seen at times rising
with the moon
as her witness
while at other times
watching the sun
rise from the cool
morning waters
of the ocean

as if unable
to decide between
day and its
shining light hiding
her whereabouts
or the night
so she may reflect
her light on lovers

The next time I see Venus and that smiling slice of light I will have a sour taste in my mouth and have an urge to go in and make lemonade. I love the lesson in Greek mythology too. This is delightful, George.

"drop of lemon juice" - a unique visual for me. This reads smooth as silk, George, and I'm a sucker for a good story with your special slant.

love the lemony allusions in this, George. So wistfully romantic throughout!

Well penned, constructive reminder of Roman mythology, that nicely empowers today's lovers.

This is serenely romantic. The exact type of poetry I like.

Nothing more I can say really; just excellent.

Quiet, softly informative, deliciously romantic, smart and round like that moon when it is full. Touches astronomy, the history of the gods, standing and looking up and love. Wonderful.

Quiet like night, gently informative, smart, softly romantic, references the gods and astronomy, and love. Delicious!

it replenishes the soul to read this, George. the way you paint this scene, is so in keeping with the Romantics, and I suspect, my friend, that you may have been Keats or Shelley or Byron or other such great in a lifetime previous to this.
