The Sound of Smiles

by Michelle Angelini

The Sound of Smiles

In spite of weariness
I drag my feet
mile after lonely mile
My worth resides in the interior
of this orange plastic bag
Is this what existence has become?
Sun’s rays chill my bones
they are old before I am
I can’t see an end
to travelled highways
where town after town
blurs into disgustingly analogous abstracts

Cars speed by not stopping
as if my name is Death
and their lives will end
if they allow me inside
I can’t lift my head
for smiles and laughter
that appear like foreign languages
So, why do I keep going?
Maybe, I think, that one
day the sound of light
will pass from their eyes to mine
Is invisibility temporary?

Author's Note: *The prize for winning this contest is to be June's potd, but since I've been a potd recently, I'm entering this only for fun, not to win. The photo did evoke not only a poem, but emotions as well.

Chelle, I like the movement in this and the de-mystifying of travel. I hear a lonliness and a search for meaning and value. I don't know the photo to which you refer. But it is not necessary to get the drift of feeling questioning in the poem. Thanks.

I really liked how you included the idea of invisibility in this.

I was drawn by the title of this piece, I think you CAN hear a smile in someone's voice. The poem itself is very emotional and has such a sad heavy feeling to it. This is some good writin' Michelle!

Nice work Michelle. Great spiritualism, 'self' examination. Defitely up there in my favourites.

I love the imagery here. "Cars speed by not stopping as if my name is Death" Brilliant. I really could feel your emotions in this one, great write.

Melancholy and poignant. Symbolism brilliant.
