Going to the Movies with You

by Glenn Currier

Going to movies with you
we travel without comments like:
Oh, look at that gorgeous house.
See that hawk on the fence post?
God! What a sunset!

Instead, when lovers kiss
I remember our date by the lake
our first heavy petting.
I squeeze the soft place in your palm
with my finger tips and smile.
You squeeze back.
I glance at you in the soft light of the screen
you smile too.
You know.

They are screaming in the front seat.
Remembering the vehemence and hurt
when I corrected your driving
in the highway rain on our last trip,
my hand moves away involuntarily
from your leg.
I feel the coldness.
We both stare, sad.

For 40 years
with you beside me
we’ve crossed continental divides
weathered ten thousand storms
arid terrain, dark tunnels,
stumbled up slopes
rocky with ego slides
reached splendid peaks
endured flickering lamps.

I rejoice and thank God.
On the silver screen
of our marriage
shines a million moments
we chose grace
over fear.

Author's Note: On December 30, 2009 we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Thank you, Helen, for being such a glorious fellow traveler.

Beautiful tribute to your wife, Glenn. 40 years! I'd have been 5 when your two paths leaned into one. "a million moments we chose grace over fear." May you share a million more.

You had me here: "I squeeze the soft place in your palm/with my finger tips and smile." That is wonderful. Love this. And congrats, so many, alas myself, don't make it. Hey, count down to the big Golden 50th!! Thanks.

...glenn, like a bud, we've seen each of us through many of those years as friends and i see more of you all the time, this depth of you that you expose/express[always there, alwasys has been] and towards Helen in this regard is too coo, too cool.

Lovely rememberings capped by those last two lines. Thank you for your example and your words.

Wow congratulations. You both sound very lucky. The last line makes an imapacting and beatuiful ending. I like how this poem is sort of a short story but holds many years in it.

Congratulations, Glenn. It is quite a remarkable feat to remain hitched for forty years and this ode, the perfect vehicle to exclaim it from the roof tops! Hurrah for the happy couple and many more.

Congrats and how beautiful you expressed what a journey marriage can be, I love the metaphor and comparison you chose. Thank you. smh

There are certain few things in life that warm a heart more than a trusted long-term and genuine relationship. How beautifully you express this. Much joy!

This is sweet, Glenn, not because it's all the sweetest sentiments, but because it is so full of the truth of it. 40 years doesn't happen on a whim....it's made of all manner of experiences and you show that here, and that it IS possible to live and tell the tale. Love it!!!! Congratulations!
