Encounter of Flowers

by Glenn Currier

Out to the back alley
to recycle our leavings
up from the valley
of my gray sleepy grievings

I chance upon a sight
of four tender shoots
six petals pure white
from four shallow roots.

In the ink of my days
and their surfacy hums
a break in the haze
and the dark hollow drums

This quartet of cheer
sprung up in a week
makes my spirit appear
and my little boy speak

Gives hope to my gloaming
a spring of surprising
an old poet’s roaming
his story arising.

Author's Note: The picture you see below was posted within Tony Whitaker's comment. Can you believe he discovered these rare orchids on a hike in the Alps. He is a Carolina boy far from home in beautiful Switzerland.

...man, what you did with a simple, lovely walk, picked-out the most quantum of importance, the ability to see with a third eye...the vision is one thing, and a great thing...and bowtie is you keen rhyme, 'tis sweet in tone...you wrote a good 'un, again! bubba.

Boy, did you ever recycle! This is great. I have to admit, I do love a poem with a rhythm that works and an unforced rhyme. Thanks for sharing!

I love poetry from something we stumble upon. It feels so hopeful in its speaking. Your thoughts bloom here as freely as the flowers, and the images are as beautiful. Delighted. Thanks.

Absolutely delectable! I love the sound of it. It's light and cheerful and lifts my soul. Puts me in mind of a little girl skipping down a country lane.

Fine story telling of a simple discovery. Your rhyme is smooth like silk, and there are many revivals in this one. (perhaps "pedals" ought to be "petals"?) I enjoyed stanza 3 very much, and the lilt to that last stanza is outstanding.

Taking a picture in time and writing about that pause is what poetry is all about.

you got such lovely rhythms metaphors going on here, Glenn. I love that you make no distinction, place no barriers betwixt the beauty of nature and man/poet.
