How I Love The Rainy Nights by Maude CurtisThe spring rains have come again
to wash away the winter blahs.
I think back to my childhood
when Momma would light the lamp,
tuck us deep into the down quilts
and make shadow puppets on the wall.
She had a story for each scary sight and sound.
The lightning was God's finger lighting the fireflys
and waking up the trees and flowers,
the thunder was an old farmer dumping his tator wagon,
his tators rolling down the rainbow
and in the rain the angels frolicked
as it turned earth's greys and browns to green again.
We'd snuggle deeper into the quilts
and make plans for our summer,
riding our bikes, going to the fishing hole,
having picnics and chasing the fireflys.
How I loved those rainy nights.
Now years later I snuggle with my hubby
under those same down quilts.
We listen to the rain and make plans for our summer.
Clean out the gutters, plant garden, reseed the yard,
clean out the fish pond, the picnics and barbcues
and watching the grandkids chase the fireflys.
As the thoughts whirl around in our heads
we snuggle deeper into the quilts
and drift off to sleep to the rhythm of the rain
matching the beat of our hearts
and my last waking thought is,
How I love the rainy nights.

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 03/10/09 at 04:46 AM I love rainy nights - definitely for snuggling under quilts. I had not heard the tator wagon tale - very clever! This is refreshing, timeless in relating the generations, and full of caring for one another. Thank you. |
