Chattahoochee

by George Hoerner

fog rises from you Chattahoochee

as the morning sun warms the air

like steam rising from my coffee

if only the fog could lift so easily

from the stupor of my mind

if only you could purify it

as easily as you purify

the water running

in your mountain streams

as it spills down your slopes

The shape lends itself perfectly to this. "if only the fog could lift so easily from the stupor of my mind" - my fav lines.

Oh yes, if we could only respond to ourselves the easy and natural way nature does, no wonder we find healing in the beauty of naute. By the way, the beauty of Chattahoochee River is commemorated in the epic poem "The Song of the Chattahoochee" by the noted Georgian poet, Sidney Lanier. Of course, Lake Lanier on the Chattahoochee is named for him. Delighted. Thanks.

Adds a whole new meaning to "morning epiphany" George. A truly great spiritual poem constructed from concrete images.

One river I always wanted to canoe as a young man was the beautiful and wild Chattahoochee at its headwaters. Reading this I see Sydney Lanier smiling, "down from the hills of Habersham down the valleys of Hall".

Favorite lines abound, beginning at one and going on till the very last...ode to a river you make me want to visit, George!

Wow, this is beautiful! I grew up in Metro Atlanta, and spent a lot of my childhood running around and playing in the Chattahoochee River. I love the form of this piece. Really nice job.

The form of this truly adds a touch of lifting fog to the thoughts it contains. Very nice to see it climbed to the top of the top 10 pyramid!

I also think the format really adds to this piece ... like a terraced waterfall of thought! Excellent sentiment too!

Always good to see a pertinent visual display (is there a term for this (the optical equivalent of onomatopoeia)?
Also interesting to note the contrast in roles of coffee and natural water - stimulation v purification. Most refreshing.

That really is a great write. It's a painting in words. Brilliant. Thanks.

Thank you for posting this... it brings the Chattahoochee back vividly. And I do so understand about the coffee!

I think we are making it increasingly more difficult for Chattahoochee or any river to purify what we need purified as a simple matter of survival. This ode is not unlike the Chattahoochee in its hayday or any a purification system. Having read it, I feel cleansed and refreshed.
