just two teens by Charlie Morganthe two boys were pals, slapping each other's shoulder;
gaunting giraffes of 7th grade-ness; pimpling the air
around them and leaving moments following behind them.
moving through the sunshine, their bony, lanky frames
reflect the barking dogs anger at the trespassing.
and the barks fall on the slumped-backed teens.
already the sun is dragging it's robe up the hill,
headed, i'm sure for an early evening meal and story.
expecting to be tucked-in warmly like every other time.
shoulders defining the horizon, looking like buzzards
they saunter into the tomorrow of the summer's evening
dropping I-Don't-Care leaflets to the public behind.
so soon will they don hats of confusion, regularity.
they will walk in shoes made by other hims, hers;
realize they are naked, hungry though clothed and fed. 05/31/2008 Posted on 05/31/2008 Copyright © 2026 Charlie Morgan

Posted by Alison McKenzie on 06/01/08 at 04:18 PM Some absolutely brilliant lines: "...the sun is dragging it's robe up the hill" (for shadows) and "realize they are naked" (the genesis of all our adulthoods). Just genius, Charlie. Muuuuah.
Posted by Glenn Currier on 06/03/08 at 03:20 PM Chaz, it has been all too long since I have loved your poems and it is so good to be back in their frothy wake. I don't know, because I have not read you in a while, but it seems I find you at a higher or at least a FRESH plain in this poem. You are a wonderous poet and I drink in your creative waters.
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 06/04/08 at 12:44 PM Yes! I watched a family with young boys as we traveled - giraffes is a perfect description for them - those funny shoulders trying to pop out. This is very endearing, prophetic, and just a fine read.
Posted by Rhiannon Jones on 06/06/08 at 03:30 PM Oh, man, this made my eyes tear up...my 13-year-old boy just graduated from middle school yesterday....you've really captured something here...
| Posted by Anastasia Shows on 06/06/08 at 04:58 PM Leaving my teens this year, its all too familiar to look back and see this. I know these boys like the back of my hand, and although all my friends are grown, i still see my guys just like this. Thanks!

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 06/07/08 at 02:29 PM An interesting coming of age poem Charlie with some innovative word usage in various places to help carry it along, such as the second line in S1, and that last stanza rocks; don hats of confusion.
