The Abundance of You by Kathleen Wilsonwhere the red leaf was it is no more.
at tip of topmost branch only the mental picture
is left attached to the photo untaken.
a five foot three and a half inch nude
posing as a still life
element by element abundances of integrated starlight
luxurious extension from galaxy by elliptical galaxy
where the polyhedron in the fountain
mimics a spilt symmetry
a snapshot at any given moment, a collection: bins of stars
in flux`and continuum the youngest and brightest
the strength of the index from the hotter
whorl the dotted vectors
oh eye the watery perianth's slow course
in synthetic luminosity
the individual is a measure
of the unknown
where stragglers merge
and the graph of our abundances looks like a bird

Posted by Michelle Angelini on 02/17/07 at 11:33 PM This sounds like you've been to the Observatory. Yet, you're pulling the galaxy down to earth for everyone to see. How amazing, I'm there with you. The only word I'd change is the first "the" in S9 to "this," making it sound more specific. Just feels as if it should be that way when I read it, but take it or leave it, as you're the author. The whole poem is just beautiful.

Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 02/18/07 at 02:28 AM Hi Kath. How delightful! Your penultimate stanza sets up the final so wonderfully. The still life, the bin of stars....thank you for this. |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 02/18/07 at 11:39 AM There is much to love and discover and absorb in this fine and intricate weave and that is the beauty of a poem weaved thus, in that it offers from its cornucopia, particulars for to seek out and to take as one's own and what better endeavor spent that to seek out such plums as this for to stain my eyes with that piquant color which is mystery. |

the 'bright star' sends its beams down the ruler.
And your calculations gives me hope that some of us still continue to grow and be more alive than we where the day/years/eons before:) |

Posted by Kyle Anne Kish on 02/22/07 at 06:57 AM You are forever surprising me with more and more beauty, Kathleen. I don't know if my mental pictures were the same as yours ... but I sure enjoyed them. Each stanza holds up unto itself and stands with great abundance. Yes, I do, I do, I do like this a lot. |
