The Sea Odette

by Elizabeth Jill

Think oftly of the day we met
we storm'd the rudeship wet
and better still, that light 'twas set
upon the sea odétte.

That blast'd yearn for want of will
whilst plucking through the grime
fond memoríes do visit still
aye, laughing in our rhyme.

A sonnet in your eyes I found
and limericks in your hair
with roses petaling the ground
and haiku in the air.

T'night I visit you in books
and crumpled sketches where
no high-born scholar ever looks;
ah, sad! —who's missed your fair!

So, swift —I kiss your poetry,
there's nothing to regret:
you've made a candle out of me
upon the sea odétte.

Instead of a poem about the sea, it's like the sea is about a poem....really fascinating, Jill. I love it.

Knowing the both of you makes this even more poignant... Beautiful, Jill.

I can't believe I have not commented on this poem before!!! I feel like it singa in my mind from many readings! It is so musical and true. I think I got lost trying to find Odette...and that is why I never wrote the comment...the Swan Lake story has an odette that is trapped in the body of a swan until recognized by her true love...also I take it as a little ode! Probably not the right interpretation...but I just love this poem, and in fact...swimming in our pool teo days ago, I wrote a little poem that is this poems little sister...without realizing...quite different, but related, surely...I will post it later. It is called "My Watery Muse, the Moon".

Jill, this is so beautiful. Isn't it amazing how each of us sees the moon - such an infinite variety of interpretations and meanings. Congratulation on POTD!

Just had to comment again - I have visited this poem many times and I find such peace on your ocean...

Mmm - poetry. Odile struggles to rise :>

Odette was a wonderful singer and this poem is a wonderful song and it brims with fascinating rhythm and sweeping sounds which alleviate all the noises in the mind and portion off all dust therein collected to its rightful bin.

I missed this poem the first time around, but that POTD honor was well deserved. This is lovely.

This grows more precious over time... as would the Muse who brought it...

You know, generations of poets will grow jealous of your skill.

This has a wonderfully archaic almost Edgar Allen Poe feel to it. Haunting, but beautiful in its rhyme and reasonable choice of words.

Each time I visit your lines they write something new into my imagination. The ease and beauty of the rhymes sing. Blessed muse, blessed Elizabeth may you ode over and over. I look forward to the moontides yet to come from your sweet poetic soul.
