Red Butte Woman

by Glenn Currier

Untitled Document

Redbutte
singular
tall against
Father Sky
her truth the
sediment of
centuries
shaped by
Eocene rivers
Silurian upheaval
winds and waters
of the Cherokee
and the Seminole.
Her silent serenity
a journey to Yosemite
mirror and mammoth
lakes and vernal falls.
Her guileless eyes
an open verdant valley
host to our pain and plight
to our darkest day and night
to grace and gifts we've divined.
Her words arrows to the mind
are calming creek or ripping torrent
born from spring and snow melted
by the sun of her zeal and love for
children - saplings torn from the soil
of their heritage risking their legacy
branches from birch and bois d'arc
scarred by ancient or recent hostilities.
Her smile warm as cuddling bear cubs
welcomes us – refugees from our wars
orphans of our emotions and relations
tempts us to loosen the grips of ego and
fall into our souls being angel offspring
of this woman-scout of the Great Spirit.

Very imaginative! I especially love poems with visuals like this one. I've seen the buttes, you capture their mystic wonderfully in this poem!

this poem rolls like thunder its mastadon over our placid circumstances and which by some circumstance of magic you make fit inside our mirror.

Reading this poem was like curling into a mothers arms, on a rainy night, when thunder and lightening have frightened you. Loved the feeling of comfort and warmth. Think this is my new Fav. by you.

Although I'm not familiar with the term 'red butte,' I like how the Great Spirit radiates throughout this poem.

I see the silhoutte of a woman in frock from the shape u have given to this poem and that is so creative and more wonderfully the words she is carved out of is so brilliantly outstanding and perfect.

A graphic and historical account of our as yet unpaid debt to Gia. Your transformational verse depicts both legend and new age truth with strong resonance and is nothing short of genius. Peace...

A beautiful tribute to the mother, children and spirit of our home, this earth. Loved the images and use of native american perspective. Having spent much time in many beautiful places such as Yosemite this certainly strikes a chord with me. Excellent!

Excellent "concrete" piece, with effective earth-imagery throughout. Is there a butte called "Red Butte Woman", and does the poem represent its shape? Well-done in any case.... d:-)

This poem takes me to the West and Northwest especially I think. Sharp distinctive imagery. Philosophical as well. Congratulations on POTD!

Something permanent and caring in a temporal and seemingly uncaring world. Excellent verse.
