If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold I know no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only ways I know it. Is there any other way?
Emily Dickinson 1830-1886

... I write poetry, it is the way I enter the world.....

"I have known love." Forrest Gump

“Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.”
-- Kahlil Gibran

"How people treat you is their karma, how you react is yours."
Wayne Dyer

"In my opinion, I am often rich- not in money, but (though it doesn't happen every day) rich- because I have found in my work something which I can devote myself to heart and soul, and which inspires me and gives meaning to life." van Gogh 1883

"I ate what?" Socrates

"First you have nothing, and then, astonishingly, after ripping out your brain and your heart and betraying your friends and ex-lovers and dreaming like a zombie over the page till you can't see or hear or smell or taste, you have something."
~T.C. Boyle

"Feeling and longing are the motive forces behind all human endeavor and human creations." ~Albert Einstein

"Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?" ~Sun Tzu
"The sweat of hard work is not to be displayed. It is much more graceful to appear favored by the gods." ~Maxine Hong Kingston

"There's a world of difference between truth and facts. Facts can obscure truth." ~Maya Angelou

"I never blame failure... but I am absolutely merciless toward lack of effort." ~F. Scott Fitzgerald

"Now I know I've got a heart, 'cause it's breaking." ~Tin Woodsman

"If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking." ~George S. Patton

"Let the beauty you love be what you do. There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth." ~Rumi

"Words, like nature, half reveal and half conceal the soul within." ~Tennyson

"What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales in comparison to what lies inside of you." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

"It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves." ~Edmund Hillary

"The well-sung woes will soothe my pensive ghost;
He best can paint ‘em, who shall feel ‘em most." ~Alexander Pope

~Albert Camus

"Those who dream by night, in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible." ~T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia)

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."
~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

"There exist only three respectable beings: the priest, the warrior, the poet. To know, to kill, and to create." ~Charles Baudelaire

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. ~Aristotle

"What should matter the most to us is a man's art and not how he lived his life. People today scrutinize an artist's personality, crowing over his mistakes, his human failings, and don't care enough about what he produced." ~Orson Welles, ca. 1953.

"Every act of creation is first an act of destruction." ~Pablo Picasso

"The difference between fiction writers and civilians is that we make it our life's work to put our daydreams and day-nightmares on paper. Most of the time we don't understand the secrets and demons that our spontaneous imaginings contain. All we feel is that there's something in us demanding to be released in the form of a story."
~David Morrell

~Orson Welles

"All of us have to be prevaricators, hypocrites, and liars every day of our lives; otherwise the social structure would fall into pieces the first day. We must act in one another's presence just as we must wear clothes. It is for the best."
~O. Henry

"Facts and truth really don't have much to do with each other." ~William Faulkner

"Action seems to follow feeling, but really action and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not." ~William James
