The Poet's Eye

by Joe Cramer

You knew a poet
So what did you do?
Leaving all of the words lying around
Surfeit of any supposed emotion.
Hamlet's ghost strides by
Though sharing nary a word.
The sun rises over Elysian Fields Boulevard
While Elvis still warbles on the old Sunset Strip.

You knew a poet
And what did you do?
Jesus sang his scarred paradigms
To you, though you were too smart to hear them,
To listen, much less pay attention.
Now all of the words are nothing less than profane.
The poet's eye, never blinking
As if it were afraid to capture,
Or perhaps even miss the moment.

"You knew a poet So what did you do? Leaving all of the words lying around Surfeit of any supposed emotion." ... you touched me right from the beginning of this poem and had my toes wriggling at the end. After all, all those words lying around can be constructed and reconstructed over and over again into bee stinging, quick-witted, mind bending ... poetry. Great write. :)
