ESP Moment

by Chris Sorrenti

I’m down at Irene’s Pub
885 Bank Street
just north of Lansdowne Park
New Year’s Eve
to see a local band
Bruce Barry and the Econolines
do cover songs of Neil Young

For a short time
the band sits down beside me
we exchange a few pleasantries
confessing they only do Neil Young
but a little Crazy Horse too
I ask them if their mentor
is aware of them
to which they smile nervously no

Over a glass of Moosehead draft
and Club Sandwich
the tune Walk On
starts playing
over and over
intermittently in my mind

Not long after
the Econolines get on stage
to tune their instruments
before the show
the first song they rehearse together?
I’ll let you guess which one

Ha! A well loved tune. Thanks for sharing this meeting of music lovers and musicians.

Neil is a one and only. Gritty aged slice of art for us to take part. Your story brings back memories of moments sharing live music with others. Thank God for the guitar, huh? We take it for granted but think about what it does for us. I played the piano - not particularly mobile. I like the flow of your narration and it was very evocative for me. Thanks, my friend.
