To My Outdoor Cat on New Year’s Eve

by Matthew Zangen

Oh, Garbage Cat,
I’m glad you stuck around
through all those other assholes
we had to fight or
wish away
from our home this year;
I like you better anyway.

Thank you for letting me pet you now
that they’re all gone,
after two years feeding you
and keeping you a safe and warm place to sleep.
Really, it’s cool, I get it.
Let the right ones in, right?
I learned that from you, I think.
It means more this way anyway.

Please don’t be offended, though,
when I wash after our flings;
you still haven’t told me where you’ve been
before we met
or when we’re away.

I know I only hang here when there’s company.
There’s still our glass door separating us
for all our sakes,
but I see you there,
right where we agreed--I think;
I guess we never talked about that.
You’re not missing anything anyway.

It’s just nice to have you near,
but not in here,
you understand, my other cat was here first,
and she doesn’t share me
and I like that about her,
and I like that you do,
so it’s just better this way.

It’s a new year, you know. I don’t know if I’ll let you in,
but I hope you’ll stay here anyway.

Unique. I like your style and the clever technique of telling us a lot about yourself as relating to the cats.

Love the meandering stream of thought of this piece Matt, especially as a cat lover and owner. Well done.

Your love for and simpatico with cats gives me an insight into your character, but also makes me want to see both the inside and outside cats. I like the way you address that cat and respect its freedom. And like me, you reveal what you learn from these mysterious creatures given to our species by some higher power who knows how much we need them and their lessons. Thanks, buddy. Great poem!
