Life Support

by Philip F De Pinto

It is night and it is cold
And everything in the house is old
And dying and most of all suffering
And given I am their caretaker
It is my responsibility to either
Let them persist in their wasting condition
Or take them off life support
After much mulling on the subject
I decide that the second option
Is the best one to take
For all concerned

And so I wait until noon
When Spring's in full bloom
And throngs of birds are chirping in the trees
And the sun is buzzing like a colony of bees
High above the horizon
Before I pull the plug
On the old radio and tv
The old refrigerator and washing machine
The old microwave oven the old computer
And last but not least the old electric
Blanket and razor

The all of which thank me
With their last humming breath
For choosing for them
A most humane death

Funny how things can become important especially after years of loyal service. Check the first word of the last strophe. --bf Ps. Hope ya have a ton of money set aside for adopting new appliances.

Very enjoyable read leaving me hanging in suspense after that first stanza and then on to the cord pulling task at hand. I loved the buzzing sun and especially that last stanza and your kind, humane death for these faithful, failing appliances. Thanks, Philip!

How many of these life companions I keep beyond their useful lives - just because I become accustomed to their presence - pitiful security blankets of sorts. I've got a garage full of them. Memories, memories - I won't let go of... Thanks for this, Phil. Well done indeed.

Thank you, dear friend. Another jewel from the mind.
