Different Combinations

by Chris Sorrenti

your soul and body are a combination lock
hopelessly I spin the dial
to gain access to their secrets
and though storefront incantations offered freely
I am deafened in that the lips producing them
will never be mine

we share the blood of Bohemia
though you say our personal demons will never mix
in the right combination to make gold
for I am only a paper sorcerer
offering shiny words to an unlicensed magician
still waiting for her Merlin to materialize

my first spin at the dial
a simple sacrifice - my heart on a page
but the combination gives you cerebral indigestion
and an equally simple response
accept your limited spell
or lose you completely

my only satisfaction
when all the snake oil charmers have abandoned you
think back to the wordsmith
who all along had the right combination
but for the witch
who couldn’t read the numbers

Author's Note: Based on a combination of women over the years. Sometimes when getting to know a lady, a guy does all the right things, ie: is patient, a perfect gentlemen, etc., and yet even though the chemistry seems right, his courting and thus he is rejected, only to find out that months or years later, she fell for a man who ended up mentally and/or physically abusing her. Go figure.

I really enjoyed how you developed this metaphor. Many fine phrases here and that last stanza is a great finish. Thanks, Chris.

I totally empathize with the plight of the perfect gentleman who makes all the right moves in a relationship the all of which go unappreciated in the end. Congratulations Chris on POTD.
