Ode to Miss M

by Kristina Woodhill

I must write you
while you are still warm
slack fur body held hard
against my cold coat
We rock together
as evening ignores
my pleas for light
I whisper private love messages
tell you what a lovely pattern
your face held
mention stripes that danced in long chorus lines
along your back
I could trace them on lazy evenings
watching Jeopardy
as you purred me a background symphony
and my lap held
the perfectly weighted blanket

Now my heart carries your weight
as my shovel digs,
hitting discordant notes
against resisting rocks
that refuse to sing my sorrow

Wow! As a fellow cat owner and lover, powerful piece of writing Kristina. I can empathise in my own way, having decided to surrender my oldest cat (13 years) to the Humane Society this Thursday. She has health issues, that I can no longer afford to treat.

Kristina, this is quite the tribute to your Miss M. It is lovely and musical at its core and that last stanza intrigues me no end.
