At First Light On A Summer's Day by Kristina WoodhillSo I walk away
from the magpie
whose left eye still blinks
whose white chest still puffs slightly
inhaling hope
who is held quite firmly
by the petite black panther
on tip toe
dragging along breakfast and lunch and dinner
the wild thing
the hungry neighbor's cat
who lives in our lot
due to the neighbor dog of the second family
moving in after the neighbor's cat of the first
they're all related
yes
it's complicated
especially for panthers
unfettered by fences
but pushed
into odd jungles
with too many corners
