Choosing a Poison

by Kristina Woodhill

so here's a good season
to let scared in
air screams out
walk into webs
shrink from four walls
closing in, closing in, closing in, closing in
hope for one tiny door
open me, alice,
stoop and be small
let a crawl be your path
through
a knee pries its scrape off
a knuckle scoffs
aided by
coral snakes
banded and bright
they're all right
when you know them
know where to let them bite
this could be just that night
perfect for choosing
two fangs
drip, drop, dripping,
or maybe a wolf
with its were on
bent on retrieving
from jason the dentist
and for your
enjoyment
its set of cleaned teeth

Excellent Halloween poem, Kristina. Compelling carefully placed images moves the whole piece nicely along.

it seems, Kristina, that we have every reason to believe that the seasons are increasing in which we should be scared in. and how! I love not only the progression in this poem but the transformation from what is thought of as spacial to take on an appearance totally claustrophobic and the only relief is through the tiny door which leads ultimately to the set of cleaned teeth upon which a vampire might spy his or her reflection? I think the trick to reading any poem is to know just where to let it bite, naturally not in the calloused parts but the very sensitive portions which makes it all the more worthwhile to permit an ode to let you feel and inject what it will. which is the idea, I think. to permit otherwise than be bitten in the sensitive areas is to take on a defensive posture which I believe counterproductive to full absorption of said poisons/potions. number nine, I believe.
