Tell Me Why

by Chris Sorrenti

Tell me why
Do the priests wear black?
When they're preaching white
There must be a simple explanation
Maybe it's camouflage to confuse the Devil?
But the Devil is a crafty beast
With many sides

Tell me why
Do they preach to us to fear God?
When God is love
God is hope
He is forgiveness

Maybe I am only sixteen
And somewhat naive
But it seems a little contradictory to me

Tell me how
Can the pope preach down to us?
Dictate how we should live
When he resides in a palace
Made of marble and gold
So far removed from our day to day lives

I don't mean to be disrespectful
Though it appears a bit ludicrous to me
As I go to church every Sunday
My parents have to drag me out of bed
And everything the priests say
Goes in one ear and out the other

How can I relate to something
That I don't comprehend?
Each Sunday
The church a little emptier
Is there something wrong out there?
Or is it only me?

Tell me why
Do the priests seem so serious?
So very angry at times
Is it that their hands are tied
With the rope of bureaucracy?

There was a time
When I wanted to be a priest too
Say my prayers
Hands clasped together proudly
With a smile
But my heart is telling me now
To cut through the red tape
Find a better way to get to Heaven

Pretty cool to read you at 16, Chris.

Fine to question orthodoxy and the church's doctrines (any denomination) but find your faith and hope in Scripture, especially in the New Testament. Pray that you will find your way in and through Jesus, the Christ who is the way the truth and the life.

I guess we have more than poetry in common Chris, for once upon a time I too aspired toward the priesthood, but something of the love for the opposite sex was simply too powerfully built in me to cloister in a building to preach, what nature could as well teach a man or woman to see God.
