eight winter haiku

by Jim Benz

epiphany--
the tea leaves in my cup
mean nothing

six inches of snow--
the squirrels still
fat as ever

so cold
even the moon
hangs low

through the snow
to the bird seed and suet
a deer path

cold night
a dog nestled deep
in our blankets

beneath the snow
and a thick crust of ice
our strawberry patch

in your eyes
I can see a universe--
the melt stream gurgling

more snow--
I could get out of bed
but why bother?

Author's Note: This is one of the few things I've written in the last year. I keep thinking I'm going to start again, then discover I have no stamina for it. C'est la vie. Update: maybe I'll add an odd haiku to this from time to time.

I really like this Jim. Quite the contrast between the first and third lines. Nice twist to the concept of "roaring silence."

Sometimes great realization is achieved through the realization of nothing. It's a great cup of tea~!

I have always argued that nothing has meaning unless we give it meaning and that is the task for each of us. Nice write Jim.

They mean nothing, or they mean nothing? Either way, as you say, they mean nothing. Well, that's something I guess.

For me, just a good cup of tea with no strings attached. Good one, Jim.

Exceptional work, sir. I see you've added four more since when I first commented. Kudos!

reading this....you should be writing more. It is beautiful. I love the imagery of even the moon hanging low. Really...I was not expecting to read a poem that i loved so much that I needed to add it to my favourites! Thanks for that.

I think I had a few of these same thoughts this winter. Some beautiful images here, specifically: "in your eyes/I can see a universe-- /the melt stream gurgling" My favorite :)

I love the road and form and hope and quiet reserve of these haikus, Jim. Each, is stooping to the earth, like a sower in a painting by Millet.
