eight winter haiku by Jim Benz
epiphany--
the tea leaves in my cup
mean nothing
six inches of snow--
the squirrels still
fat as ever
so cold
even the moon
hangs low
through the snow
to the bird seed and suet
a deer path
cold night
a dog nestled deep
in our blankets
beneath the snow
and a thick crust of ice
our strawberry patch
in your eyes
I can see a universe--
the melt stream gurgling
more snow--
I could get out of bed
but why bother?
02/17/2014 Author's Note: This is one of the few things I've written in the last year. I keep thinking I'm going to start again, then discover I have no stamina for it. C'est la vie. Update: maybe I'll add an odd haiku to this from time to time.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 02/17/14 at 07:00 PM I really like this Jim. Quite the contrast between the first and third lines. Nice twist to the concept of "roaring silence." |
Posted by Steve Michaels on 02/17/14 at 11:03 PM Sometimes great realization is achieved through the realization of nothing. It's a great cup of tea~! |
Posted by George Hoerner on 02/18/14 at 12:43 AM I have always argued that nothing has meaning unless we give it meaning and that is the task for each of us. Nice write Jim. |
Posted by Laura Doom on 02/18/14 at 11:11 AM They mean nothing, or they mean nothing? Either way, as you say, they mean nothing. Well, that's something I guess. |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 02/18/14 at 04:00 PM For me, just a good cup of tea with no strings attached. Good one, Jim. |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 03/01/14 at 11:59 PM Exceptional work, sir. I see you've added four more since when I first commented. Kudos! |
Posted by Sam Roberts on 03/03/14 at 12:09 AM reading this....you should be writing more. It is beautiful. I love the imagery of even the moon hanging low. Really...I was not expecting to read a poem that i loved so much that I needed to add it to my favourites! Thanks for that. |
Posted by Wendy Geal on 04/02/14 at 02:06 PM I think I had a few of these same thoughts this winter. Some beautiful images here, specifically: "in your eyes/I can see a universe--
/the melt stream gurgling" My favorite :) |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 07/06/14 at 11:07 AM I love the road and form and hope and quiet reserve of these haikus, Jim. Each, is stooping to the earth, like a sower in a painting by Millet. |
