It's Summer!

by Linda Fuller

It’s summer! Beaches sag beneath the weight
of bouncy babes and studly dudes in heat:
“Check out that chick, I’ll rate her nine point eight” -
their clumsy overtures doomed to defeat.

It’s summer! In a fourth floor walkup flat
an old man breathes his last and hits the floor.
The temperature had reached one twenty. That
was hotter than the sand at Jersey Shore.

It’s summer! Mother Earth’s a crusty mess.
Her temper flares, her forests turn to fire.
Her skin is parched and cracked, she’s in distress;
she seeks surcease, the situation’s dire.

Oh, summer! Would that you could stay all year;
ignite the night, incinerate our sphere.

I enjoyed the write but I personally prefer the four seasons.

Linda. I love the rhymes and the metaphor in the guise of Summer which can be a bummer taken to its extremities. It seems those in the throes of such a metaphor, can pray some whirling fan or dervish to save the day, save most of us lack such a fan or dervish to cool us in our Summer of discontent. And although we are Summerily discontented does not mean that we can't appreciate an ode such as this, blissful to read and recapture a time spent on the Jersey Shore, which was oft more than a youth could handle, seeing all that Summer and shapely stuff surging in the surf as makes one considerably removed from his youth lament, the days and the rays gone by.

This is a romp in sardonic humor, and I love it. I can't help but laugh even while feeling a mighty purge would do us good. Those last two lines are just so choice.

YUP...couldn't have said it better. We could use a bit of that endless summer up here in Ottawa, having just received our first snowfall this morning. Albeit still to warm to stay. Excellent poetic snapshots here also, Linda.
