I Should Be Sleeping

by Kevin Fehlen

I should be sleeping,
But instead I have a strong desire
for coffee and a notebook

Like the days of old
When the ink of night
Would flow through my pen
Onto my page
Until finally there was none left
And no choice but for the sun to
rise
And consume my weary mind.

I should be sleeping,
But instead I have a strong desire
for coffee and a notebook

To watch the stars and chart
their movements with words.
With poetry.
To drink the night air
And place it on my pages
To feel the breeze of inspiration
And creative exhaustion.

To feel the buzz
To to taste the earth
Caffeine coursing
Through my veins
Spilling out anxious
Verbiage and verse.

I should be sleeping,
Work tomorrow.

Ironically I come across this poem after just returning to "the craft" after a three year absence. I love the imagery of your poem, not to mention the well-connected feeling when you feel like you've finally found your voice again. Nice job!

I really like how your pen flows in this with the "ink of night", the buzz you feel, and the phrase "I should be sleeping" that is repeated with that strong and steady pull writers feel. Congrats on POTD.
