Aboard The Spirit of Adventure

by Kristina Woodhill

six-foot sea swells
seward sightseer
surrendered
stomach
social skills
stability
stumbling sideways
stayed laid out
seven sailing hours
like a sardine
sedated
for the salty, salty can

Author's Note: Kenai Fjords out of Seward, Alaska. Fabulous sunshine, plenty of sea critturs to view, not for the lack of trying but apparently I am a terra firma gal.

I understand! Fortunately I've never been sick, either air or sea and I've been on little rough water. Eight of us were on a sailboat in the Delaware Bay when a storm came up and ripped the mainsail. The diesel engine failed so the coast guard came to our rescue an towed us in to dock. I hope the rest of your trip was fine.

Have a personal mantra of the sea: the smaller the ship, the less times you will see me on it. Love the big cruisers, but you'll never get me on a whale watcher..and Kristina you've just told the world why

Aside from taking a half hour ferry ride between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in the early 80s, I've never been to sea. I love how your poesm allows me to live vicariously your adventure. I've heard of those Alaskan cruises, aside from the sea sickness, sounds spectacular.

I love your poetry, Kristina. Love your sense of adventure. Love the fact that you write what you actually see in your travels, unlike some of us, who are bound with short leashes and inklined to discovering topics only if they venture in their imagination.
