2am [cerebral overload/sensory overdrive]

by Laura Doom

The best years of my life
will always be ahead of me
trailing null hypotheses
along the road to ruing
every indecision made;
driving xy chromosomes
from headlocked memory lanes
on the highway to Hesperus.

Making light of tragedy
she pulls me from the wreckage
of a multiple pile-up personality
gasping pre-existence
as if it were a life-line
to a long-lost friend.

The hands of self-appointed gods
select reverse when adulthood
rams infancy and back-seat love
is written off, a passenger
beyond repair, beneath reproach.

I am permanently adrift
upon an ocean of mixed metaphors
and shallow hyperbole. The sun
rises in my rear-view mirror
and I wonder how long
I've been asleep at the wheel.

A very nice write and it sounds as if you are in the same boat with holes that the rest of us hold onto. It points toward the middle of the ocean rather than the shore and the water just gets deeper.

oh how I wish my brain could combust like yours in poetry

along the road to ruing alongside you, partner :)

The sun rises in my rear-view mirror and I wonder how long I've been asleep at the wheel. What more can be said. another poetic piece to pique...

Brilliant piece of work Laura. Totally blown away here in the colonies. Some things are better left undissected, and just left in their entirety to be gazed upon in wonder. :)

I love this. It's like nothing and everything I've ever seen from you before. That second stanza... Damn. As ever, I miss your clever play with words. (And I wish the IM feature was working so that we could do another colab. Gah!)

Brilliant piece of work Laura, especially that last closing stanza...to me...the very heart of the poem and matter.

Not much left to be said but if you lock your arms and just nod, you can get at least 30 seconds of sleep across Nebraska highways, or those like it, long, stretched out expanse...was it 2:00:30 when you were done writing this soul grabber? Like nice tie from xy chromosomes and the ocean and the boats we upon which we all are adrift. Your poetry always makes me want to reread multiple philosophies....
