while baking

by Kristina Woodhill

taking the measure of you
took time
tossed in this big mixing bowl
you and me
flour with soda awaiting
salt's spare sprinkle
three fourths cup brown and white
you old,
me new to two of your kind
white sugar with molasses
equals brown sugar with your sticky attitude
a dollop of molasses tones the color
a dollop of molasses binds those who
sift through easily
two broken eggs
we yolked our way through
i'd never heard such silly words
from a grown man, a grown man
chocolate chips might give enough melt
to keep us together
coming back
letting things cool
tasting full flavor in careful bites
each 12 minute panful
baked you a permanent smile

until tuesday
tuesday swallowed you
in one long gulp
leaving
my spatula, weightless,
again

Author's Note: Lost my step dad on Tuesday. The man loved my chocolate chip cookies. Losing two dads is really the pits.

You've put so much love in here, it's melting in my mouth. This is such an out loud piece, I hope you read for him and for everyone who knew him, with all the flavor and spirit you've captured. ty for the write, lk

A beautiful tribute; heartfelt. You're so right. I don't care what everyone says- time doesn't heal ALL wounds. Every time I light a candle... I remember and I cry. He was MY Dad- a unique human being; as I'm sure your Dad (s) were also. I'm so sorry for your loss- he'd love this piece.

My condolences for your loss, Kristina. But what better way to bring out the child in us than ooey gooey warm out of the oven chocolate chip cookies, washed down with an ice cold glass of milk.

*laughing* at "yolked our way through, Laughing..." It's a tender piece, from your heart, and I'm sorry that you are hurting. I love your heart.

beyond the tribute to your beloved step dad, Kristina, this poem stands apart as something quite remarkable, one of the finest I've seen from your pen.
