Star Valley

by George Hoerner

we lived for a while
in a valley which unrolled
from mountains on both
east and west sides
meeting in the center
with only a slight tilt
from south to north

it was so beautiful there
so that there need be
new words to describe it
the few small towns
the churches demanding
adherence to rules
set down by a make believe
people serious enough to
kill or be killed over the words

being touched by the mountain beauty
must have been like seeing the
burning bush or the sea parting
a valley must be driven through
over and over again like birds
in their annual flight north to south
and back again until every watering spot,
resting and feeding place is imprinted

the silence of the valley is its beauty
a quiet mind hears words in the flowing water
sees spring in melting snow and
the return of elk to the mountains
and knows infinity in the
star light of night sky

There are two or three parts of this poems that make it feel endless and maybe even epic. There is a timelessness about it.

We drove through this valley two days ago, George, and I thought of you. The maple were red and showing off all over the place, the splendor of the new fall dampened only by the smoky haze here and there. I can imagine the passion you mention in S2 being a part of this gorgeous area. I love the descriptions in this and the mix of spiritual with the natural world. This a strong piece from beginning to end. Everyone should have a valley like this to visit, drive through, live in at least once in their lifetime. Thanks, George.

Thought provoking capture of nature and humanity. The cycle of seasons well illustrated. kill or be killed over the words...sadly reminds me of 'Militant Islam,' and what's currently going on in the world. The folly of all those who take religion too seriously, but thankfully nature brings most of us back to our senses.

'it was so beautiful there, so that there need be, new words to describe it' - what a perfect description! your reader can picture this in our mind's eye without effort b/c 'a quiet mind hears words'.. such a poignant piece - with multiple layers. thank you for sharing it with us.

The why and how of existence, or at least an appropriate backdrop.

Never a dull moment when I step into the valley of your poetry.

I don't know how I missed this one George. And it was POTD. Belated congratulations my friend. And what is a valley for, lest it inspire such an ode as you have writ, which sits well in the soul.
