The Song of Solomon by Ken Harnisch
Where the waters ran most swiftly
We would lay, one form, two souls
Warmed by the sun and desire in equal parts
There was talk of love, but that was
A dissertation for quieter places
Where raiment and sobriety reigned
And we could sip the wine of conversation
Here in the meadow, we said little;
Here the moans of the inarticulate reigned
Each earthy cry brought
Forth our complete and utter
Comprehension of the arson
We had ignited to wanting flesh
Oh love, I have tasted you!
Your perfume and cream;
The fruit of your flesh and
All its sweet mystery
You have touched me
And held me and wanted me
Your eyes have gone black and deep
With your desires, unfettered
By convention or the sanity we leave behind
You sipped my ambrosia and wanted more
I was baptized at your sacred temple
And worship there forever.
Oh, how we
Tumbled in the sun and rain and knew
Not which liquors passed our lips
And rendered us incoherent
We walk in the sun
Holding hands which touched the flame
Pressing fingers to lips which scorched
The other’s flesh, everywhere
Rendering the poems of ancients
On your ears, pretending civility
To the world, while conjoined in the
Madness of our fire.
