Physics Philosophy and Reality

by George Hoerner

the past is irrevocable
the future barely approachable
and in between
the here and now

i love this moment
though as it passes
i can’t change a thing
the future beyond my grasp

it approaches and is past
gone like my old loves
gone like the money i didn’t save
reality begins to crash around me

some philosophers believe
physical reality illusory
everything made with holes
between the atoms electrons

the car i drive
the chair in which i sit
have served me well
i haven’t hit the road or floor

so i continue to take my chances
with my mental picture
of my reality
until they lock me up

Author's Note: Written after reading Scientific American's Special edition on "A Matter of Time". And these are the people that built the atomic bomb and put people on the moon AMAZING!!

There's a really well defined, beautifully realized mediation of the universe at large here. A desire to figure things out that really comes across in these lines. I loved it.

Being an old (and I mean OLD) philosophy major, I especially like your epistemological bent. Thank God I do not often think about whether I am sitting on quarks or within a Higgs field. I just enjoy this soft leather chair and the way it supports my old bones. Thanks for a delight, George.

"i love this moment" - this is the thought I try to hold onto, as my mind just boggles when people discuss what is real. Your last line adds humor to this deep subject - I appreciate that and I like the way you have explored the subject.

I like how this takes us from time and space as a whole down to the atomic level. The car and chair make for excellent examples of the philosophy behind tyhe poem. I'm no physicist, but another way of looking at it is every mass, from a rock to a human being, etc. are just vibrations, each one unique in its frequency.

The second and third stanzas are my favorite, though the entire poem is gorgeous. Fabulous!
