City Insomnia

by Kevin Fehlen

This city is killing me.
I long for frozen fields,
And stars so bright.
Where silence is carried
on your breath that
floats to the moon.

Where the whiskey and
the cattails, tell
stories of lives
well lived.

I long for trees that speak
to us in the dead of night.
Of gravel roads and toads
I've always known.

But instead I live here,
in this city full of lights.
Asphalt jungles and plastic
people.

I contemplate the warmth
of your love to that
of a good hay.

"I long for trees that speak to us in the dead of night. Of gravel roads and toads I've always known."--Love that. Love those trees, too.

This country mouse loves to visit the city, but give me the fields. Congrats on POTD! I love the roads and toads, the breath that floats to the moon. That first line is definitive.

You can't even imagine how much I relate to this. Gorgeous. I can't wait to read more.

the city I suppose is where the soul seeks merriment and the country where it seeks fullfillment. I suppose the soul needs a bit of the former and a whole lot of the latter in order to function optimally and compose odes paying homage to a rose is a rose is a rose. lovely rose, this ode.
