Damn You!

by Gregory R Schelske

I set back the clock for you-
I turned back a few pages in that desk calendar
you gave me last Christmas.
Nothing changed.

I stayed awake until September
hoping you would come home.
I left the light on for you
(they lied - the bulb's lifespan is only 5,000 hours)

I swept the sidewalk this morning
thinking you might have stayed away
to keep your boots from getting dirty.
Silly me - you don't wear boots.
Still, you managed to walk all over me.

I don't hold grudges-
but there's not much I can do
about the internal bruising.
Thankfully it is easy to hide.

I don't wear my heart on my sleeve-
mostly because I wear short sleeves.
Still, there isn't much to see.

Just thought you should know.

I like the dry humor in this. It's at its best in the second to last stanza. Great work.

Heart-wrenching yet acidic. I love the second stanza.

I love the way certain writers can stretch something like "I stayed awake until..." followed by an impossibility that fits. And I love the way you subtly address other subjects besides the obvious here.

This is a uproariously clever ode and tender. I don't know any poets personally, but if I did, I doubt any could keep a poker face as it concerns love, particularly the kind that folds and walks away from the gaming table, even though it had an unbeatable hand. Love is strange that way and yet how do we ever manage to live with or without such a strange concocted word as is love?
