Divine Duo by Glenn CurrierOh how you spoke yesterday
filled the room
your leaves fell in tears
your voice whispered in sighs
spoke in words
and measured
through the mouth of the preacher.
I liked the preacher.
His age and veteranship of funerals
did not diminish his energy
and care for the family.
I liked the way he rocked quickly but firmly from foot to foot
like the good Protestant preachers do
when they reach points of keen conviction.
Your spirit glided over and through the gathering of souls
your gentleness and love lingered
like the sublime elegance
of mist on a pond
obscuring the details
of cypress and morning glory.
You touched us in the hugs
tight with compassion
in softly laid hands on shoulders
in songs redolent with memories
of romance and ideals,
in pianist fingers
playing a message
from the promised land.
Oh how you sang yesterday
a crescendo from the quiet footfalls
of the first chapel arrivals
swelling in greetings and weeping
in stories shared and expressions of care.
Ending in the resounding
soft sound
of your Divine Duo. 09/25/2010 Author's Note: Author's note: What a good pair God and Sandy make.
My friend Sandy Richardson's funeral was yesterday. This is my reflection on that gathering.

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 09/25/10 at 08:10 PM Very touching - I am there with you all. I love the phrase "Divine Duo" and also something very special about the line "your leaves fell in tears". |
Posted by Charlie Morgan on 09/25/10 at 09:44 PM ...aptly named; aptly expressed by your signature delivery, rolling in perception v feeling and like a tumbleweed disturbs nothing in its path. a glenn production! |
Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 09/28/10 at 01:46 AM With compassion and pathos, but not pity, you've given a very moving tribute to a good friend. |
