NYC morning by Carolyn CovilleI inhale the fume-filled air,
letting it seep into my brain, rush through my senses
I close my eyes, absorbing its freshness.
Watching from my bus window, morning sunlight streams over the waking city.
Delis, cafes, diners, bars, from Chinese to Lebanese, Mexican and Italian.
Cozy barbershops, exclusive salons, 24-hour parking garages, Gaseterias...
Self-named newsstands, Duane Reade, and Rite Aid.
Pedestrians scurry across flashing, red-handed crosswalks,
then disappear into subway stair openings.
Bicyclists dodge M4s and BX15s, while yellow taxis weave in and out of lanes.
Baggy clothed teens, business-suited men...
Madison Avenue transforms, from glamorous store windows to graffiti-painted apartments.
Lonely playgrounds, empty only for a few more hours.
Overflowing trash bins, surrounded by pecking pigeons.
These comforting scenes whirl by me;
It's a lovely, New York City morning. 01/24/2004 Posted on 09/07/2010 Copyright © 2024 Carolyn Coville

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 09/07/10 at 04:32 PM Aptly described, easy to visualize. I've never been to NYC, but your poem immediately brought Toronto to mind. Although Ottawa too is a city, much smaller and not as polluted as some others. |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 12/06/10 at 08:49 PM How did I ever miss this gem? So many lines that catch it all perfectly and make this native Big Appler proud! Especially love the line about bicyclists dodging the M4 and BX15 busses. Perfecto, Carolyn. Perfecto! |
Posted by Lucia Haselhorst on 12/13/11 at 05:52 AM Your poem reminded me of another great city, Chicago. The business of the city, friendly faces, by Layola University near lake Michigan. Great memories. Thanks for your images. I enjoyed your poem. |
