Surface

by George Hoerner

reflecting the sky
the ocean’s water
spreads before us

sand searches
the shore edge
looking for
some way around

as water pulls
the sand
grain by grain
into the ocean

the water in
all its wetness
yearns to be dry
banging on the shore
for its secret

but the sand
content to give
a grain or two
lays silently next
to the water and

gives a quick
wink to the sun

I don't know if it was your intention but the longing of the ocean tugs at me on a very primal level. The imagery invoked in this poem is wonderful and can go so many different ways!

Vivid and effortless. I like the choice of words, especially the ending. Quite a great piece of poetry..

as if water could understand the secrets of sand, ha!

George, this piece is so nostalgic for me because being from the Gulf coast and from our many travels I have stood or sat mesmerized by the motion of the ocean and the fantastic patterns made by the water seeping into the sand as the waves ebb. You bring the interaction of the elements alive. Cool piece. Thanks

I love this one, George. It takes me back to wonderful beaches in Mayo and brought wonderment on a dull day. Peter

Love how you personify the elements here. Excellent story telling with the wink of an eye.

Nothing more I can add-beautiful, graphic write.

I thoroughly enjoyed this relationship between water and sand - I, too, feel the pull of the ocean. S4 is my fav, for sure.

Love this. Living right by the sea I have spent so many hours watching this exchange and you've captured it beautifully, especially that delicious sense of the battlefront, the constant changing flux at the tide's edge that belies the slow, eternal, patient war between land and sea.

Oh, unrequited love.

This is an intricate nature poem, George. I like how it moves in a cyclical pattern. Kinda like life itself.
