sun screen

by Kristina Woodhill

summer sneaked in two days ago
coating us all with
one hundred and two degrees
of sun spots' glaring platitudes

i was ready for its verve,
its ability to blaze through
clouds of human ignorance,
sputtering clinkers left behind, blackened

on each flat, flat gray concrete patio;
i saw it coming -
i dove under my own ash,
mighty fortress of leafy green;

i can grow it, too, you know,
my screen against
direct rays and indirect insinuations;
i can shine straight backatcha, sol

hear my clinking glass
hear my shaded summer sigh

I like the use of clinkers (which I had to Google) and clinking, and the quick turn when one reaches "ash" - I like you shining right back at the sun.

We haven't hit that mark on the thermometer yet although it lies and scares us when it sits in the sun and says it 124 in mid afternoon. Good write lady. The humidity stays rather high here so you can't work much outside unless you take frequent breaks.

This is just wonderful. Your language radiates with the day you speak of. Summer afternoon- summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. Delighted. Thanks.

Nature offers us some of the best protection against Nature!! This has the feel of heat ripples and cool relief in a yearly seasonal tradition I've never been too fond of!!

I sit in the shade. This piece is a beautiful read on a beautiful Summer day.

I love the human response to the sun and those who would burn like it, as if to say it will not conquer the spirit. Creative weaving of imagery and human grit. Thanks my friend.

Something we all have to deal with in these days of ozone depletion and high UV; refreshing, exemplary fleshing out (pardon the pun) of subject, Kris. Personally, except for just a few minutes at a time (to get my natural vitamin D), I avoid exposure as much as possible. :o)
