by V. Blake

there was always something
beautifully disingenuous
in the way you would wash off
one-night-stand warpaint
with bars of soap
you stole from hotels.

There's something flippantly elegant in the way you structure your poems, man. I love it.

"beautifully disingenuous"..my tongue stumbles over it but I do like it. Once again you manage to it so much irony into so few lines, giving your words the kick they always posses.

I actually cursed out loud when I read this (why is it we have LOL but no COL?) Anyway -the point is -this is one of your best as far as your condensed pieces -you keep the language simple but you choose the perfect words to convey this sort of bemused horror, the form and structure are also simple but beautifully orchestrated, and the inherent attitude is made perfectly clear -there is a twinge of sadness in this but skillfully hidden behind a sort of insouciance and shaking of the head. Definitely highest marks and definitely getting added to favourites.

When I read many of your poems, they are like, poetical snippets of a story, like a puzzle yet put together....you should write a book. Not kidding.

I love the wry humour of this. The kind of poetry I like to write from time to time myself, and am certanly happy to read. Well done Vince!

Makes me remember some nights in the Holiday Inns of my tempestuous youth, Vince..I'll never look at those miniature bars of house branded soap the same again! And I'll check the dresser drawer to see if anyone stole the Bible.:0

Those little bars of soap - neatly wrapped, waiting, waiting.... Loved this, Vince - the war paint line evokes many images and intentions. Thanks for this.

This maybe your most vicious piece ever...and I love it.

i get this. it's simple and yet incredibly dimensional. i love the intimacy of the idea and the hint of adoration with which it's delivered.

Oh yeah!

I always thought that I paid for that hotel soap. I thought it was part of the outrageous deal and bill to be charging for a one night stand donning warpaint and not to include the soap to wash it off is truly disingenuous as opposed to this ode which hits the mark sure and pure and true.

Speaking from the bottom of the list, I feel slightly redundant -- anyway, without getting too evangelical, I like the various interplays at work in this; war, religion, sex, morality, fur products (! How did that get in here?)

but it never does wash-off completely hmm? this is wonderful Vince.

I remember that day.

You know you've captured one of those oh-so-relatable common threads of thought on the matter. The title could aptly be an opening line or a great last line....great write. Delighted. Thanks.
