Hay

by George Hoerner

this morning is fine
and it's all mine
i'll shake this day
it’s time to make hay

time to tweak the word
till the world sees
truth must be shaken about
to see if it is stout

time is not static
it doesn’t live in the attic
nor does the truth
and attacking it isn’t uncouth

watch it slip and slide
today it is wide
tomorrow slim so
don’t accept it on a whim

i'll test it till it's weak
and unable to speak
as i persist stepping into the day
and there’s no more hay to make

Great rhythm, word play, all that good stuff that makes this a nice, lyrical bit of writing. Wonderfully enjoyable work, sir.

Makes me want to take advantage of all today has to offer me and like by the famous words of JFK. Thank you.

"time to tweak the word"--->I love this! It echoes everything you've got in this poem, which is in fact tweaking the world by turning an ordinary word (hey) into something worth poetry and into poetry indeed. Well done!

This feels like a playful tweak and a wink at Time. I especially liked: "today it is wide /tomorrow slim..." And the idea that it doesn't live in the attic - gathering dust. Keep on stepping into the day and making hey, my friend!

if anyone has the inside track and their hand on the pulse and the meaning of truth it is you, George. Whatever truth is, You keep wacking at it to discover its form, which you clearly arrive at in this poem.
