twilight

by Melissa Arel

i am lonely at the evening's twilight, even frail to the touch.
my armor has fallen to the threshing floor and my defenses
are weak. i am in need of you. your words. your strength.
the laborious day's diligence has left me drained and weary,
my mind is lamenting and my heart is distressed. all that will
placate my melancholy brooding is your touch. your voice. your kiss.
do not delay too long my love. i will keep a faithful, steadfast watch
until i hear the gentle rapping at my door and see your paladin face,
breathe in your warming scent, lose myself in your soothing arms.
my inner tempest has faded and i am at rest within you: my salvation.

Author's Note: i find that during the day i'm too busy with distractions to allow myself to think about the hardships we are going through. its at night when all those things i've pushed aside or to the back of my mind, come to surface.

We are indeed fortunate, if we survive some suffering of the day, and have one to catch us as we release tension, I fear for some the never end with the night. You poem speaks of a true blessing, and long, long may it continue. Thanka.

...paladin face got me! not easy wanting/needing Paladin or at least a paladin face...that was a good bow-tie to the ensemble of why you yearn for it/him/the paladin...no other word would have done, smack-0 melissa. good un.

Rich vocabulary, mature longing, I can feel the weariness along with the solution. VEry nice.

I know this feeling. You write it so well.

I was worried for a moment that this might have some connection to a certain set of awful, awful books, but I was very quickly assuaged of that fear, and you hit this one out of the ballpark from there.

Like Vince, I was thinking of a certain literary creation when i first read the title. But as he said, you went in an entirely original direction and the result was heartfelt and sincere in its depth, but also rife with hope that puts this one up there among your recent best, Mel

I can so relate to the theme... the laying down or daily armor at twilight - yearning for respite in the arms of my grace. I like the sentiment but more than that, I like the word choice, the flow, the way you make meaning with art.

great to see you in the top ten, Mel. Woohoo! Your words paint the same pictures as do your photographs :) G

The "Author's Notes' really added something for me to this poem. Whereas I am a morning person and do my creative things then, I need that same "time" to push away the world and be me! Great write!
