Returning

by V. Blake

the evening was dressed in a deep August purple,
and the twilight air felt less like atmosphere
than a draught of a soft, vanilla smoke, that
slid over our skin till it dripped from our fingertips
with every last grace of a calm and velvet honey
returning to the earth.

and we'll never forget the mist,
or how it hung like a stained-glass window
of orange and silver and lime
while it bent the most stubborn needles of sunset
away from the precious tapestry of moonbeams
returning to the sky.

but it was the truth of the shadows,
as they rolled lazily from shingle to sidewalk,
that served to wash the moment clean of nostalgias
which might otherwise weary we fortunate few, who were,
though barely afloat on this stream of consciousness,
returning to the stars.

...vince, this is heavier and beautifulier than you think...i could make a feast out of your words...each seemed to fit so well, editors need not apply...you're beginning to tick me off, being this good and all...

...vince what is so good about this pome is that it's like a cacoon in which all, ALL humans exist. sorta we all see the sunset but each sees their 'own' sunset, the law of perspective is the only law that can't be repealed by someone else...your pome is wonderfully pervasive in it's perch.

The first few lines kept me entranced, and wrapped me with a blanket of warm feeling.... great !

Excellent work, Vince. Definitely worthy of a POTD nom.

Charlie said it best. To me, this poem is a well-woven tapestry of strong imagery. The language you used greatly contributes to its flow and, though appearing simple from the outset, conveys a complicated and rich context.

You already know I think this is breathtaking -but it bears repeating...this is breathtaking. So there.

I was going to highlight a couple of my favorite phrases here, but I just can't, I like it all. You've written something quite lush here..no wonder so many are enjoying it...and congats on hitting No.1 with it, well deserved. Delighted. Thansks.

I am sitting here at the edge of a very stressfull year trying to eek out the beauty and here you have provided with your words and memories a picture perfect moment that reminds me of what I will cherish and treasure, a sunset, a poem and the words that others provide...thank you. smh

This poem sparkles with a brilliance that makes it - all at once - difficult and easy to see the stars. I loved reading it aloud and hearing its wonderful rhythm. But above all, this is a poem so obviously in love with words. To be such a lover is the highest aspiration of great poets. You aspire and inspire. Thanks, Vince. This is quite lovely.

Masterful - I shall take my pen and creep away. ;) Thank you for these thoughts shared.
