The Only Human Being in the World

by Glenn Currier

Such a keen pleasure to savor
the only human being in the world
who knows this particular little thing about me

someone I trust to love me enough
to forego
the tingly euphoria of gossip.

I recall a few urgent teary-eyed conversations
recounting with these trustees
some snide comment, indifference, or sarcasm,

the thorn of self loathing
that I cared what others said
still sticking in my brain.

But sadly, most of the rebar and cement
moments of forming this foundation of trust
are lost in the valleys of my memory.

Is it crime or glory
I take for granted
their abidance in my pain?

What a keen pleasure
to savor someone who is
the only human being in the world.

...i reel, i am stammered. lay me down for i shall never attain this platitude of loveliness, for real...and i am hacked that i can't say what you just said, ahhh overwhelmed is a word that fits.

Trusting enough to become vulnerable is something one does very cautiously, even reluctantly. But to find that one human in whom we can so trust is so very satisfying! Well, that is my commentary on this fine expression of the human condition. I especially liked your analogy in the fifth stanza.

This celebrates no small thing, and you've said it all humbly, but with conviction. Ponderous. It is unfortunate, considering that enthusiasm moves the world, that so few enthusiasts can be trusted to speak the or listen with compassion. Is is mere coincidence the word "listen" has the same letters as the word "silent". This is just a wonderful poem. Thanks.

AAhh, I am sending this to my safe place friends with a big "what he said". In this world when people oft repeat what has been said and all is plastered on facebook or forwarded in texts and emails the private conversation seems to go by the wayside. You have recaptured that and it is honored here with all its nuance and respect. Thank you. smh

Pardon the cliche, but yu hit the nail on the head with this one Glenn! Such an insight into the mind of man and, more importantly, the importance of those who care enough to be called 'friend'. Nice touch on the "solid" fifth stanza.

Staggeringly honest. I hope it is not presumptuous to say I think I know what you say is true. And you say it such an genuine, straight forward and yet subtle way. This one is right on! Beautifully said.

at the end of the day all of our experiences either ring hollow or solid or somewhere in between. this poem is a testament to your searching the realm of possibilities beyond the requisite and superficial and to discover in the process, profound subtleties about oneself and about one's relationship to the world, is a venture worth its salt.

You really spotlight what one individual can do for another - I admire that title phrase very much, full of meaning. A heartfelt last stanza. Thank you.

"someone I trust to love me enough / to forego / the tingly euphoria of gossip" Yes. And the last stanza put a lump in my throat. Great write!

No words of praise could adequately describe the absolute amazement of this piece -- so in short, I will say thank you -- thank you for being one of the few.

I heard once that we form the deep bonds that we do so that there will be a record-keeper. It's a shame when those records get moved from soul to soul, little pieces flying away with the winds of change. I love that you wrote about it.

I feel like every time I read one of your poems, it becomes my new favorite. This one is no exception. Normally this is where I quote the lines I liked most, but since there's just no choosing, I'll stick to "Job well done."

Really great write Glenn! It appears I missed this in apathy or something worse. I was just saying to someone on this site earlier today that it is amazing how you can open up to someone a thousand miles away easier than to the person setting across the table. Very well done!

This is wonderful. You describe the must of a trust needed to allow us to go to those very issues we need to address so well. Seems to always get back to a root of worth. Will this person still think I'm worth something if I tell them about this flaw or that flaw? The thorn of the 4th stanza is hard to handle sometimes by creatures created for community but you've done a brilliant job of outlining it with your own personality. Truly wonderful writing!
