Five and a half year old wisdom

by Shannon McEwen

A tone only a boy of five can master
Reverent and arrogant both
With wide eyes
Lips lifted up; enamel twinkles

Honest brown orbs meet weary green
Matter of fact declaration
“I’m not gonna tell you your belly’s big and fat
even if it is”

“Cause that’s not nice”
A reassuring pat
Followed by a proud swagger
He skips away; vindicated

Author's Note: written when I was 8 months pregnant, it's a good thing my older son is cute....or he'd so be dead.

...love the momentary visitations of kids growing up...such a learning tool, eh?...i am re-juvenated with megrandson Kai, so when you write re: your kid[s], i'm there girl...i love this lil' afternoon delight of honesty from the young-un...smack-0.

It is a shame that year after year we teach the young ones how important it is to not say the things we think. We say it so often sometimes they forget later in life to say "I love you" and just leave all the important things as if they were understood. And we all know somewhere that this just is not true. If only adults had the open honesty of children - wow what a world.

I love this. I will share it with some of the women in my life... those who love children and all the sparkling confetti they spread in our sometimes dreary days. The innocence and cleverness bare my enamel twinkles. Thanks Shannon.

Ha! A precious moment - funny, outrageous, and real. Thank you.
