A Long Drive Home

by Alison McKenzie

Windows down
Goin 68 all the way
Hot winds of scorcher days
Insects finding their demise
On fingers surfing the trades

Into my nostrils fly
Sweetgrass, blackberries,
River water, burning fields
And someone is growing
A crop of skunk
Wishin I could share the yield.

Music loud
All the way home
And singing so the world will hear
And knowing no one does
Anyway…

Author's Note: In defense of my apparently deadly fingers, the insects that flew into my windshield/hit my hands were on death missions. They had little signs, and suicide mission t-shirts. I'm not making that up. I swear.

Those poor insects =P

I really enjoyed the line "On fingers surfing the trades" in terms of its use of language and placement.

Great work as usual Mrs. McKenzie

You persevere, Allison. You take the ups and downs, and you survive, grow, and it seems becoming stronger and more vulnerable at the same time. And I think that's a good thing, the more strength we gain, the more niches there are for vulnerabilities to work their work their way in...this poem is goin' like 60 (68), and it's abandon, despite what life commands we "tow" with us, is terrific. You seethe strength in this. Thanks.

Energetic and funny... I can feel the warm summer wind in my hair. Nice Alison.

I like the feeling of release here. One thing I believe, is once you feel centered and happy with where you are, good things will happen. Sometimes we try to hard to be happy.

Very nicely put Alison. Easy to visualise with the descriptiveness of a few lines. Excllent!

You make a drive home an adventure in life and .... well.... death. Hope you aren't a Buddhist... you windshield wielding death merchant. :-) Fun read. You grin me.
