parley in the vines by Kristina Woodhillsquash bug don't know nothin'
cept humpin' bugs and suckin'
leaves from melons, flaccid flop
cantalope curl, twist, then drop
squash bug eggs laid hid from view
need no nest, just squash bug glue
tight, tight, tight on under-leaf
moves in quiet, leaf-sap thief
few quick moons chase few quick suns
squash bug babes swarm, feasts begun
morning smiles on stout, green stems
evening pales at shriveled limbs
need to get a message to
the squash bug king, a parley-vous
happy here to share a slice
of melon sugar, pumpkin spice
cantalope i'd leave some wedges
zukes or cukes fresh crunchy edges
got no qualms with take and give
but gotta have the plants left live
let's feast, bug king, i'll add a kiss, you'll
lay your eggs on summer thistle

Posted by A. Paige White on 07/22/09 at 04:11 PM lol, do I detect a bit of bite in this parley-vous? "evening pales at shriveled limbs"... (great line!) Perhaps a bit of sevin dust? |
Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 07/22/09 at 08:12 PM Though snails are exceedingly slow,
There is one thing I'd like to know.
If I out run 'em round the yard,
How come they beat me to the chard?
..If you can't beat them, you might as we join them, or with them...fun-knee! Thanks. |
Posted by Christel Crews on 07/23/09 at 02:12 AM what a clever twisting read! we have a very small garden and i go out daily to see the damage done... so sad sometimes, but this brought a smile to my face :-) |
Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 07/25/09 at 12:08 PM Hahaha! Wonderfully humorous view of a garden pest. Never ending battle until frost! |
Posted by Glenn Currier on 07/26/09 at 04:50 AM How these kings command we big-brained geniuses and with such microspeed we can't imagine. Great description of the multiplying taking place in the garden - and you with such equanimity! :-) |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 08/04/09 at 01:42 AM LOL! What a fun read when the syntax skates across and bounces off the tip of tongue as this one does. If you don't mind my asking, how did you get the word "here" appear in italics when the WYSIWYG editor still doesn't seem to be working on this site? Adds to favorites. |
Posted by Don Matley on 03/19/11 at 10:57 PM This needs to be read aloud so the quick beat and drum diction of a scurrying newborn bug is revealed....excellent alive read....kudos all around |
