behind dark eyes

by Kristina Woodhill

men in maintenance crews stare my way
through dark sun glasses as I ride by;
they are covered head to foot in warm clothes,
hard to break a sweat on a cool, breezy morning
as the big machines do all their work

their stare is as old as adam
when eve appeared from his big dream,
the intent as plain as a hand turning the next page,
the message sent with the speed of light
hoping the dove might send back an olive branch

i, too, am covered head to foot
and glance their way through my also-covered eyes,
amused and amazed that all three stare the same stare,
as I acknowledge the mystery that drives us

i truly hope they have someone to go home to,
someone to touch them gently, who cares, as I have,
an elevating presence in their lives;
i can't know if their stares are more habit than true need

i silently thank them for those stares, however,
needed from time to time to rebut aging's sense of humor,
knowing were they to pass me on the street
on an ordinary short-sleeved summer day,
most young lions would no longer waste a glance

so like any wise female cougar in the wild,
where mystery serves many needs,
on this day, i keep my distance, keep my cover,
and keep my fantasy of youthful days
and lusty up-close exchanges zipped close, hugged tight

Love it! Just because there's a little frost on the roof, it doesn't mean there's no fire in the fireplace... *giggle*
I so relate to this one!

Never too old to watch the pretty girls go by! And it may well be more habit than "need". You surely take note that there is a reciprocity not usually acknowledged.

Great write Kristina!! I'll never forget the management class I attended while I was probably about 35. A psychologist ran it and he started by telling us the 5 major "human drives". Sex was in the top 3 and you acknowledge both sides of the coin. Well done lady!

Excellent telling on one aspect of life, interaction between the sexes. With the roles reversed, I too have experienced such glances, and glances back. Now that I'm older, they don't come as often, but still flattering when they do. Fortunately for now, I do have someone to come home to. Well done Kristina!

I love this. It thoroughly captures a moment of human exchange between the sexes. It carries to me the depth of meaning in lightspeed glances. But the part that is especially delicious is the gratitude and wonder in the writer, the smile of appreciation for the present moment and the memories it evokes. I just wish I had been one of them glancing at you. Fantastic poem, Kristina.
