Unit Nine

by Glenn Currier

I pull off the 101
the tires crackling the gravel
as if on cue the fist of my gut
opens like a beggar
seeking to fill the void.

A greeting and brief exchange
at the office
yields the key to my freedom.
Slowly, savoring the anticipation
I make my way to unit nine.

Turning the key I picture
the knotty pine walls
and the red brick fireplace.
Up one step
and a twist of my wrist
I breathe in the roomÂ’s embrace.

Through the wide windows
the Pacific - in an instant
pacifies knotted worry
and immerses me
in the power of now,
frees me to explore
the deep regions of me
hidden in the taut normalcy of the city
now half a world north.

Unable to force a thought
of luggage and bags
my soul has sunk
into the soft promise of peace
whispering from the surf.

This is a palace
of solitude
an oasis for the soul
embracing me
welcoming me home.

Author's Note: Dedicated to the good people of Cape Cod Cottages in Waldport, Oregon and to my sister who beckoned me there and made it our home for three wonderful days.

I've only been on the Oregon coast once, but it seems to me anywhere there could sooth the soul of just about anyone. Nice write.

...glenn, i am wont to tease you 1) you're a good friend, 2) because this is a delightful string of Zen moments, one of those like CharMin said, 'like we were there!'...envy goin' on here! but not jealousy, ahem.

Ahhhh the sweet pleasure of retirement. The letting go and renewal! It is a great adventure you have begun and expressed so well in this anticipatory poem.

Very enjoyable sharing this visit with you - warm descriptions of an area with a lot of meaning for my family.

Thanks to you and your sister for the invite and painting the picture so well I too could feel the ocean air and breathe the fresh air. smh.

Excellent descriptiveness Glenn, injecting the reader right into the visuals and sensation of the room and experience. Kudos!
